Wasco has named Chad Martinez head football coach for the 2018 season.

Martinez was interim coach for the program following the midseason resignation of Rick Stewart. Stewart stepped down as head coach after his leukemia diagnosis. Martinez, in turn, was promoted from defensive assistant to head coach.

Martinez took over the program in Week 7 and led the team to a 3-2 record. Wasco dropped its last two games of the season — a 44-7 loss at Shafter and then a 41-7 defeat in the Central Section playoffs to Delano. The Tigers finished the year with a 5-6 overall record.

From Inglewood, Martinez played two years at Fresno State as a linebacker before graduating from the school in 2011. This is the first head coaching job for the 28-year-old.

Wasco Athletic Director Raul Rangel said five people interviewed for the position, and that Martinez came out on top.

“It’s real nice to get a full offseason,” Martinez said. “I’m really excited with what we have coming back. A lot of weapons. We had a really young team. I’m really looking forward to bigger and better things from this group.”
