Kyle Bonicki went 3 for 5 with five RBIs, including a go-ahead, three-run home run in the seventh inning to spark the Bakersfield Train Robbers to an 18-12 victory over the host Alpine (Texas) 06 Cowboys in the opening game of the Pecos League championship series.
The Train Robbers moved one victory from capturing their first Pecos League championship in just their second year in Bakersfield. The team plays play Game 2 today at 5 p.m. in Alpine.
Bakersfield, which is 5-0 in the playoffs, scored four runs in the first, but Alpine countered with a seven-run second and eventually built an 11-7 lead after six innings.
But the Train Robbers rallied in the seventh, making the most of a pair of walks, an error, a wild pitch and a single to set the stage for Bonicki’s blast that gave Bakersfield a 14-12 lead.
Brett Balkan had four hits, including a homer, and scored four runs, Sonny Cortez was 4 for 6 with three runs scored and Jesse Baker was 3 for 6 with a triple and two RBIs for the Train Robbers.
