J. Eric Gonzales was named head football coach at Golden Valley High School on Monday.
Gonzales has over 20 years of high school coaching experience. Most recently, he was offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Taft.
Gonzales, 40, will start meeting with Golden Valley players and staff this week. During his career he's been a coordinator on all sides of the ball — offense, defense and special teams — he said. He's also been a head coach at the freshman/sophomore and junior varsity levels.
"I'm really excited about it," Gonzales said of his first varsity head coaching job. "This is something I've been working for, for a really long time. I'm raring to go and ready to get to work."
Gonzales replaces Erich Smith, who resigned this offseason after compiling a 51-68 record during his 10-year tenure with the program. Under Smith, Golden Valley reached the Central Section Division III semifinals in 2015 but went 3-7 each of the past two seasons.
