Nick Ellis

Goaltender Nick Ellis focuses on the puck through a maze of bodies during a Condors game last season. Ellis will likely see action either tonight or on Friday night in preseason games for the Condors as he begins his second season with the team.

With enough bodies in camp for a full-fledge scrimmage, the Condors did just that on Wednesday to help prepare for a preseason game at 6:30 p.m. tonight against San Jose.

“We wanted to get guys up to speed as far as game situations,” Condors coach Gerry Fleming said of the scrimmage. “Some of the try-out guys haven’t played since last season.”

Others have played in numerous games, starting with the Young Guns Tournament Penticton, B.C. and continuing on into the Edmonton Oilers training camp.

Fleming said all of the try-out players will see action in at least one preseason game, some players will participate in both preseason games (the Condors play in Stockton on Friday) and others will not play at all.

Those not participating are assured of being on the team and rest at this point is more important, Fleming said.

By resting some guys it give Fleming and his staff a better chance to evaluate those players fighting for a spot on the team.

“It’s really important to take a look at guys we haven’t seen in game action,” Fleming said.

Several more players arrived in town on Wednesday as the training camp roster swelled to 33. Fleming expect a handful of other players could be assigned in the next day or two as Edmonton continues to pare down its roster.

Edmonton Oilers Assistant General Manager Keith Gretzky is in town and will help evaluate players in both preseason games before heading back to Edmonton.

The Condors announced on Wednesday that all 68 regular-season games will be broadcast on Fox Sports 970 AM and video-streamed via AHL Live, starting on Oct. 6 when the Condors open the season in Stockton.

Also, all Friday and Saturday road games will be be able to be seen at Brimstone inside the Padre Hotel, the official watch party site for the team.
