Sport Mods headline five divisions of competition on Saturday night at Bakersfield Speedway.

Also in action will be Hobby Stocks, Mod Lites, Mini Stocks and NMRA Three-Quarter Midgets.

Cody Johnson, with two wins, is the only repeat winner through the first six Hobby Stock features and holds a commanding 44 point lead over his brother, Nicholas, who has one win.

Too hot for ANRA race at Famoso

The heat is on and with temperatures expected to climb to 105 or more this weekend, the American Nostalgia Racing Association has postponed its Summer Nationals event set for Auto Club Famoso Raceway.

It is the second straight year the Summer Nationals has fallen victim to the heat.

“For 13 years we’ve had races in June and never had any trouble, now we get it back to back,” said series director Butch Headrick. “I have a lot of racers that would have shown up, but you have to take in consideration the track crew and everyone else. I don’t want anyone getting sick.”

Headrick has not set a date for the postponed race, but said it likely will be in November, when the series has a date for a tentative race. The series has races set for August and October.

The back-to-back heats outs have promoted Headrick to rethink his scheduling.

“I like to have 60 days between races so the racers have time to fix anything that might break,” he said. “We’ll probably do races in April and May next year then sit out June and July.”

K&N West Series hits the road (course)

Derek Thorn of Bakersfield has the points lead as the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West heads to Sonoma Raceway for its annual race on the 1.990-mile road course.

Thorn won the race in 2013, the year he won the series title, and he is is leading points heading into Saturday’s race.

Also competing will be David Mayhew of Bakersfield, who won at Sonoma in 2015.
