East High has fired football coach David Fanucchi after four seasons, according to campus athletic director Ken Chapman.

“The decision was made by our administration,” Chapman said. “And without going into details for the respect of coach Fanucchi, who really is a great guy, I can say is this was in the best interest of our student-athletes and we needed to see a change. Things just weren’t progressing.”

The Blades were 15-26 in four seasons under Fanucchi, which included an 8-win season in 2016, but East is 3-7 this year, including 0-5 in the South Yosemite League.

Dave Thorpe, the former East High head coach who was not on staff as a coach this season but is on campus as a teacher, will take over as interim head coach for the Blades’ Central Section Division IV playoff game at North on Thursday.

East was 8-20 in Thorpe's three years as head coach from 2011-13.
