There were a few areas that Cal State Bakersfield women’s basketball head coach Greg McCall said Tuesday morning he would be keyed in on when his team hosted Stanislaus State later at night. The first aspect he mentioned was defense.

His players responded by shutting out the Warriors in the first quarter en route to a 58-35 win in an exhibition game at the Icardo Center on Tuesday. CSUB will open the season on the road at Texas-El Paso on Nov. 11 and play its first game at the Icardo Center on Nov. 14 against Fresno Pacific.

The Roadrunners exited the first 10 minutes with a 16-0 lead and led 32-8 at the half. No CSUB player scored in double-digits but five tallied at least seven points.

Redshirt junior guard Jazmine Johnson led the way with nine points in her 15 minutes. Senior forward Aja Williams and junior transfer Malaysia McHenry each added eight. McHenry led the team with four steals.

It wasn’t a great shooting night for the Roadrunners as guard Kate Tokuhara went 0-for-7 and 0-for-5 from beyond the arc, trying to pick up the lost 3-point production from last season. Williams was 3-for-12.

Redshirt senior center Jazmyne Bartee did not play because she tweaked her ankle, McCall said.
