CSUB pitcher Austin Davis delivers a pitch during a February game against Wisconson-Milwaukee at Hardt Field.

Sophomore left-hander Austin Davis, who was 4-9 with a 4.03 ERA at Cal State Bakersfield this season, signed with the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday.

"It was a really tough decision and a lot of thought went into it because (CSUB is) going to be so good next year," Davis said. "But ultimately I had to do what was best for my career."

Davis, a 12th-round selection of the Phillies in the Major League draft earlier this month, will open play in the Gulf Coast League with the Phillies' rookie league team based out of Clearwater, Fla.

"It really hits home when you show up and see your locker and your uniform, and you get to practice with all these top prospects from different schools all across the country," Davis said. "Now I'm here and I just want to see what I can do."
