It rained in Bakersfield on Thursday, snow fell in the Sierra and hockey season is around the corner.

That final point was driven home Thursday as the Edmonton Oilers reduced their training camp roster by 13, with all of those players headed south to Bakersfield.

The Condors open training camp Monday at the Bakersfield Ice Sports Center.

The Oilers reassigned defensemen Ethan Bear, Ziyat Paigin and Ben Betker to the Condors as well as forwards Greg Chase, Brandon Christoffer, Joseph Gambardella and Kyle Platzer and goaltender Shane Starrett.

Released from try-out agreements were forwards Ryan Hamilton, Josh Currie, Chad Butcher, Zach O’Brien and Evan Polei. All are under AHL contracts with the Condors.

Hamilton, who is entering his 12th professional season, has served as Condors captain the past two seasons.

Among those hanging with the Oilers — who head into back-to-back preseason games Friday and Saturday — is Joey LaLeggia, who converted from defense to forward midway through last season and wound up with 20 goals for the Condors.

The Oilers have 40 players remaining in camp: 23 forwards, 13 defensemen and four goaltenders.

It will be a short training camp for the Condors, who play preseason games Thursday (at home against San Jose) and next Friday in Stockton. The Condors open the regular season Oct. 6 in Stockton.
