The Bakersfield Train Robbers are the 2018 Pecos League champions.

The Train Robbers took home the crown with a 7-4 win over the Alpine 06 Cowboys on Saturday in Alpine, Texas. Bakersfield took two of three games from the 06 Cowboys in the championship series, with all three games played in Alpine.

Saturday’s rubber match saw Bakersfield take a 1-0 lead, fall behind 2-1 after the first inning, then take a 3-2 advantage before scoring four runs in the top of the sixth. The rally was highlighted by a two-run base hit from Peter Yorgen and subsequent RBI singles from Michael Elwell and Steve Pascual.

Yorgen finished the evening with three RBIs while Pascual added two of his own.

Elwell also starred on the mound, picking up the win after going six innings, surrendering four runs (two earned) on four hits and eight walks. He struck out five.

Jonathon Fleckenstein threw two scoreless innings to pick up the save for the Train Robbers.

This was the eighth year of existence for the Pecos League — a 12-team independent league — and the second year for the Train Robbers who came to town from Topeka, Kansas. Bakersfield won the four-team Pacific Division this season with a 37-26 overall record.

The Train Robbers advanced to the championship series by beating the California City Whiptails in the opening round and the Tucson Saguaros in the second round of the playoffs.
