Bakersfield College will take on Long Beach City College on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Patriotic Bowl.
The game will be played in Long Beach.
Here are three things fans need to know going into the game:
One final game: After finishing the regular season 7-3, BC qualified for bowl eligibility and now gets to take the field one final time. For local players such as Lameshio Hill (running back, Bakersfield High School), Brandon Jones (quarterback, Bakersfield Christian High School), Cesar De Leon (quarterback, Centennial High School), Coleman Olivas (wide receiver, Bakersfield High School), Matt Hubble (linebacker, Liberty High School) and Bobby Robinson (cornerback, South High School) it’s the last time they’ll take the field representing Bakersfield. It also will be the last time they’ll get to flash their skills for college recruiters at the next level. There’s good Bakersfield representation on the Renegades every year, and this season is no different.
These two teams played last year…: In the Western State Bowl. In Long Beach. And it was a wild one. Long Beach (9-3 record last season) won 47-41 over Bakersfield (which finished with a 6-5 overall mark). BC scored a touchdown with 3:33 remaining in the game but got no closer. The two teams combined for over 1,000 yards of offense that day (with Long Beach accounting for 676). Truth be told, BC looked like a possible 2017 state playoff team a few weeks ago. The Renegades closed the season with consecutive losses, however, and now find themselves in a bowl game. And, sure enough, they’ll see Long Beach once again, in a big one. Each team holds 7-3 records this year.
Will defense, special teams shine again?: They have this year, at least in terms of scoring touchdowns. The Renegades have scored four defensive TDs and four special teams TDs this season. All have come in the last eight weeks of the season, and they’ve scored in such fashion in four straight contests. In Week 2 of the season, BC also recorded a defensive safety. Would the Renegades hold a 7-3 record without those kind of numbers? Not likely. Will they pull a similar rabbit out of their hat this week? We shall see.
