Northeast Bakersfield schoolchildren are raising money to help clean up their neighborhood library branch.

Students from Henry Eissler School and Colonel Howard Nichols School have been collecting donations for the Kern County Library northeast Bakersfield branch, said Jennifer Scheidle, academic program leader for Eissler School.

A vandal broke into the branch late last month, smashing windows and destroying books.

The branch hosted Eissler Library Nights on the last Thursday of every month, but because of the vandalism, Thursday evening's event was moved to Eissler.

The schools also planned to present to the branch's head librarian recent donations totaling more than $2,200.

So far, Eissler School students have gathered a little more than $1,200 and Nichols students have obtained more than $1,000, Scheidle said.
