PHOTO GALLERY: Rosca de reyes in time for Epiphany

Production of a Mexican-style rosca de reyes cakes was in full swing Tuesday at Emmanuel's Bakery and Taqueria on East Truxtun Avenue as local families prepare for Catholic day of Epiphany, celebrated each year on Jan. 6.

A plastic baby Jesus is hidden inside each of the 100 or so roscas made by owner and head baker Marcial Lagunas and assistant baker Jacinto Banda. Whoever gets the slice containing the baby is expected to bring tamales to a gathering Feb. 2 to celebrate Día de la Candelaria, or Candlemas Day.

Roscas come in different sizes and are typically decorated with sweet paste, caramel and jellies. They are part of a tradition that includes gifts of candy and fruit stuffed inside the shoes that children leave out the night before Epiphany, known in Mexico as Día de los Tres Reyes Magos.
