Orange Belt Stages to cancel bus service to some valley cities, Las Vegas

Orange Belt Stages is canceling its Visalia-Porterville-Bakersfield-Barstow to Las Vegas bus service effective Aug. 31 primarily due to declining ridership and revenue, it was announced Friday.

Intermediate cities include Tehachapi, Mojave and Boron.

The company said in a news release national and local intercity bus ridership has dropped substantially in recent years because cheaper gas is prompting people to drive their own cars and city and county transit systems are diluting ridership.

In addition, the company said, state Air Resources Board diesel vehicle regulations are adding operational costs, as are other things.

Amtrak and Greyhound Lines have service to some cancelled cities, Orange Belt said, as do other local transit agencies including Golden Empire Transit.
