Houchin Community Blood Bank saw an increase in donors last week due to the mass shooting in Las Vegas on Oct. 1.

The blood bank said that following the attack, it collected 193 platelet units compared with 134 the week before. The number of platelet donors last week more than tripled the previous week's, jumping from 7 to 23. Lastly, 795 red blood cells were collected compared with 548 the previous week.

“Houchin Community Blood Bank is grateful for the outpouring of support following the Las Vegas tragedy,” the bank said in a news release.

The blood bank said platelet donations are the most important, as they can save more lives than just blood itself.

A-positive, A-negative, B-positive and B-negative donors are encouraged to wait about three weeks to donate, as they already have an ample supply of donations from those donors. However, people with O-positive and O-negative blood types are still needed.

“AB donors are only needed for plasma and platelet donations, as they can take any blood type in an emergency situation and therefore AB red blood cells are not routinely stocked at hospitals,” the blood bank said.
