Driving through picturesque Wasco this weekend? (Pictured here is the 2017 Wasco Festival of Roses Parade.) You'll need to choose a detour.

Heading to Wasco for a weekend of frivolity this Friday? No? Well, perhaps you were planning on driving right on through that quaint little farm town to the Central Coast. Yes, that seems more likely.

In either case, prepare for a detour. On Tuesday Caltrans announced the full closure of a half-mile stretch of State Route 46 — all weekend — for culvert placement across the highway.

Weather permitting, Highway 46 east of Wasco will be closed between Highway 99 and roughly Beech Avenue, effectively shutting down the main access road into Wasco and that particular route to San Luis Obispo County.

The closure starts Friday, Jan. 5, at 6 a.m., and ends Monday, Jan. 8, at 6 a.m., and will include all on-ramps and off-ramps at Highway 99.

Detour routes will be posted. Coming from the west, they'll be posted at Poplar Avenue, directing traffic to State Route 43 and Whistler Road.

Closures may continue for longer periods of time if necessary, due to delays caused by weather or other, unforeseen events.

Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes if possible. Bakersfield residents will most likely want to choose Highway 58 through Rosedale or Highway 166 through Cuyama.
