Kern County firefighters were responding to the Tarina Fire on Breckinridge Road, about four miles from Tarina Court, late into Friday evening.

At 2:48 p.m. the fire department received a call about a 15-acre grass fire. As of 8:15 p.m., the fire reportedly had spread to around 1,000 acres and was 50 percent contained, according to Kern County Fire Department Public Information Officer Nate Perkins.

He said no structures were threatened. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

More than 100 firefighters responded to the scene. The Kern County Fire Department was assisted by the U.S. Forest Service, Cal Fire and the Bakersfield Fire Department.

Crews are still working to contain the spread of the fire with a coordinated attack including: fire apparatus, fire dozers, hand crews, helicopters and air tankers. Personnel will remain on scene Friday night and Saturday to continue securing containment around the fire as well as performing mop up within the areas already burned.
