The California State University board of trustees gave outgoing Cal State Bakersfield President Horace Mitchell the title of president emeritus on Wednesday.
The award is given to CSU presidents as a reflection of their many years of service to students, faculty and staff.
Mitchell previously earned the vice chancellor-business affairs emeritus title from the president of the University of California system for his work as vice chancellor of business and administrative services at UC Berkeley.
“It has been my privilege and honor to serve our community and our students as president of CSU Bakersfield over the past 14 years,” Mitchell said upon receiving the title. “I’ve always been very clear when people have given me compliments that the work we’ve done is the result of the commitment and hard work of the faculty and staff at the university who are outstanding, along with the support that we receive from our alumni, our community, and the various supporters of the university.”
Kern County is now offering residents the Coast2CoastRx prescription discount card.
The card is given out free of charge and can be used at all pharmacy chains and most independent pharmacies in the county. Anyone can use the card, regardless of income, age or health status. The card can be found at coast2coastrx.com.
According to the county, the card can save residents an average of 65 percent on the cost of their prescriptions. The card also can be used for discounts on dental and vision care, veterinary services, lab tests and more.
The county will receive a royalty of $1.25 per prescription under the program.
The Junior League of Bakersfield has announced this year’s Volunteer and Sustainer of the Year winners.
Tonya Vallicella has been named Volunteer of the Year, the highest achievement that can be given to an active member. Vallicella has been part of the Junior League of Bakersfield for 13 years and has served in several different leadership positions, including communications vice president, finance vice president and website chair.
She will continue to serve on the 2018-19 board of directors as the administrative vice president.
Cindy Meek was named Sustainer of the Year. Meek is a past president of the league and has volunteered with organizations such as Kern Bridges, the Garces Memorial High School Foundation and the Bakersfield Community House. She has served as president for some of those organizations as well.
The Junior League of Bakersfield is an organization of women focused on promoting voluntarism, improving the community and developing the potential of women.
The Kern Veterans Memorial Foundation is holding its annual Memorial Day program on Saturday.
The foundation will hold its Salute to Kern’s Fallen Heroes at 1:30 p.m. at the Kern Veterans Memorial, located at Truxtun Avenue and S Street. The event will include the national anthem, flag salute, guest speakers, rifle salute and the playing of taps. Medal of Honor citations of two local heroes will also be read aloud.
Wil Pickard, director of the Bakersfield National Cemetery, will be the keynote speaker. Several local and state elected officials are scheduled to attend.

The Padre Hotel is hosting a Dancing Under the Stars event on Saturday.
Heather Morris, known for her singing and acting on the Fox TV series “Glee” and “Dancing With the Stars, ” will be at the Padre, 1702 18th St., from 4:30 to 10 p.m. to offer a dance class with her. The event will also include a performance and Q&A as well as appetizers and cocktails.
Tickets are $48 for Kern Dance Alliance members or $90 for a couple. Tickets are $58 for one person or $100 for couples who aren’t members. VIP tickets are $150.
