Golden Empire Transit on Tuesday started installing 11 new bus shelters in Bakersfield, offering riders covered, semi-enclosed waiting areas with benches at bus stops.
They will increase the overall number of shelters to 177, GET said in a news release.
The shelters have dusk-to-dawn solar light, a perforated steel shade screen and a bench. They are in commercial areas with frequent service and large numbers of riders, areas where there are many older or disabled people, neighborhoods where buses run infrequently, transfer points, schools, medical facilities and social service agencies, GET's release said.
The 11 shelters are located on Auburn Street eastbound at Fairfax Road; the East Niles Community Health Center; Winco on Coffee Road; Rosedale Highway at Camino del Rio Court; Stockdale Highway eastbound at Town & Country; Panama Lane at Hammond and near Colony Street; North Sillect Avenue and Arrow Street; White Lane eastbound at South H Street; Wilson Road eastbound near South H St.; and the post office on Camino Media at Old River Road.
