Two people who were seriously injured in a stabbing on Sunday are now in fair and stable condition, according to police.

The Bakersfield Police Department said a 29-year-old woman and 27-year-old man are still recovering at Kern Medical Center after they received major injuries from being attacked by a man with a machete. The man has been identified as local musician Blaine Hodge. The woman has not been identified.

Officers received a call around 11:43 a.m. about a possible stabbing at an apartment complex in the 5100 block of Marsha Street. As police arrived, another 911 call came in reporting a stabbing inside the Starbucks at 5101 Stockdale Highway.

The two victims were found and taken to Kern Medical in critical condition. The suspect, 31-year-old Robert Daniel Rivas, attempted to flee the scene after the stabbing but was caught and arrested on Marsha Street by California Highway Patrol officers who were in the area, police said.

Rivas was booked into the Kern County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and resisting a peace officer.

The department said the suspect and female victim had been together at the apartment complex when there was a physical altercation that turned into a stabbing. BPD said after being attacked at the complex, the woman ran to the Starbucks to ask for help, and was allegedly followed by Rivas.

The male victim, identified as Blaine Hodge, was a good Samaritan who saw what was happening and tried to intervene, police said.

Rivas had been in a previous romantic relationship with the female victim, according to BPD. The department did confirm that the suspect and victim knew each other and that they were together at the time the incident occurred.

The Starbucks was closed down on Sunday but has since been re-opened.
