A woman was killed in a stabbing in downtown Bakersfield on Friday.

According to the Bakersfield Police Department, officers were sent to 20th and Eye streets about 8:50 p.m. after getting a report of an assault with a deadly weapon. When officers arrived, they found a 19-year-old woman who had suffered a stab wound to the chest. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said a 21-year-old woman suspected of stabbing the victim has been taken into custody, but no arrest has been made yet. The department said it was the suspect who initially called the police to report the incident.

“She still had the knife with her when officers got there,” said Lt. Jason Townsend.

Police said it is believed that the two women had gotten into an argument that turned violent outside Dagny’s Coffee Co. No information has been provided on what started the argument.

“A stabbing death like this involving two women is very rare,” Townsend said.

The homicide comes just less than two weeks after another 19-year-old, Kasey Villegas, was killed in a stabbing in front of the Fox Theater at 20th and H streets on Feb. 18 after a Bone Thugs-N-Harmony concert, not far from where Friday’s homicide happened.

The BPD said it is not believed at this point that the two stabbings are linked.

“This one is totally unrelated to the Fox Theater stabbing. It’s just a coincidence,” said Townsend.

The case is still under investigation.

Sad attempt at NRA inspired humor.

Not to make fun of a true tragedy, but shouldn't we have an immediate ban on knives? Especially military style assault knives.
