Two Bakersfield teenagers died after a single-vehicle rollover crash on Interstate 5 Sunday evening, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Sidney Chang, 15, and Amal Shurbaji, 18, were both passengers in a Jeep driven by a 17-year-old girl on northbound I-5, the Kern County Coroner's Office said Monday afternoon.

The Jeep was in the No. 1 traffic lane south of Grapevine Road at about 5:25 p.m. when another vehicle changed lanes directly in front of it, the CHP said.

The Jeep's driver "took evasive action and lost control of the vehicle," officers said. The Jeep traveled into the center median where it struck a raised asphalt curb and embankment and overturned an unknown number of times.

The Jeep came to rest in the No. 1 lane, according to the CHP. All four occupants suffered injuries and were taken to Kern Medical Center, where two were later pronounced dead.

The crash remains under investigation and it doesn't appear alcohol or drugs were involved, according to the CHP.
