A female pedestrian was killed early Sunday morning in east Bakersfield by a hit-and-run drunk driver who was later arrested, according to a California Highway Patrol report

The 30-year-old woman, whose name has not yet been released, was from San Leandro, Calif. Abraham Maciel Jr., the 28-year-old driver who was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, is from Lamont.

At approximately 1:55 a.m., Maciel was driving a 2010 Buick Enclave southbound on Weedpatch Highway just south of Kernita Road, when he struck the woman, who was walking northbound on the highway’s south shoulder, with the right side of his car, CHP said.

After hitting the pedestrian, Maciel allegedly fled the scene southbound, the report said. The woman sustained major injuries, including the loss of a leg, and was taken to Kern Medical, where she died from her injuries. Maciel was later found and arrested, CHP said.

The accident remains under investigation.
