A Kern County jury on Tuesday convicted a motorist of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter for striking and killing a woman walking in an unmarked crosswalk last year.

Garry Vansant faces up to a year in jail at his March 13 sentencing, according to the District Attorney's office.

Vansant was driving 47 mph at 9:46 a.m. March 7 when he hit Sara Hernandez as she crossed the street at Ashe and McKee roads, according to D.A.'s office news release. It was a "very clear day," the release said, and Vansant became distracted and stopped looking at the road.

He didn't brake until after hitting the 41-year-old Hernandez, a mother of four, according to the release. Hernandez had been walking in a crosswalk to get to Bakersfield Sports Village Soccer Park.
