A 66-year-old inmate at Wasco State Prison died over the weekend after being attacked by another inmate a third his age, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
Agustin Duran was assaulted by 19-year-old Andres Ayon on Saturday evening, CDCR reported. Ayon struck Duran in the face and upper body, and continued to hit him until prison staff used a pepper spray grenade.
Ayon was placed in handcuffs and taken to a temporary holding cell, according to CDCR. Duran was airlifted to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:48 p.m. Sunday.
The Kern County District Attorney's office is assisting in the investigation.
Ayon was received into CDCR custody from Kern County on June 22 to serve a six-year sentence for second-degree robbery and use of a deadly weapon.
Duran was received by CDCR July 2 from Los Angeles County to serve a term of 55 years to life for lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14, according to CDCR.
