A Kern County sheriff's sergeant has been cited for improper storage of a handgun after four firearms — including one later found at the scene of an officer-involved shooting — were stolen from an unmarked sheriff's vehicle parked at the sergeant's residence, a Sheriff's Office news release said Wednesday.

The guns were stolen early Oct. 17 from the vehicle of Sgt. David Stephens on Avanti Drive, sheriff's officials said.

One of the guns was found shortly afterward, and two more were recovered a week later near the area of Rosedale Highway and Rudd Avenue, where a teen was arrested on a charge of possession of stolen property.

The final gun was recovered Saturday near where a man was fatally shot by police after leading officers on a short chase, according to police. That man, Augustus Joshua Crawford, 20, was a suspect in a shooting that wounded a man earlier Saturday.

We are always very iffy when it comes to firearm storage in Claremont. I mean, clearly we have no control over what our clients put inside their rented self storage units, but thank goodness that the law is on our side when it comes to who takes the final liability if something happens to illegal equipment found inside one of these storage lockers.
