A 64-year-old bicyclist who was struck by a garbage truck Tuesday morning has died, according to a coroner's release.

Michael Yunk, of Bakersfield, was pedaling along the 200 block of Jefferson Street, northeast of downtown, when he tried to pass a City of Bakersfield garbage truck, police and coroner's officials said.

Yunk lost control of his bike and fell, and the truck ran over him, police said. The driver called 911, and Yunk was taken to Kern Medical Center, where he died about six hours later.

Police said neither drugs, alcohol nor speed appeared to be a factor for the truck driver.
