Eight police officers suffered smoke inhalation Thursday after an allegedly suicidal man set fire to an apartment in south Bakersfield, police said.

Six of the officers were treated on scene and returned to duty, while two others received further medical treatment.

Brian Moore, the man accused of starting the blaze, was arrested on charges of arson and multiple counts of attempted murder. The 29-year-old was treated for minor injuries.

Police said officers were dispatched at 3:05 p.m. to 3535 South H St. to check the welfare of a suicidal person threatening to set himself on fire. Arriving officers saw smoke coming from an apartment.

Bakersfield firefighters were already on scene dealing with a vehicle fire in the parking lot that was later determined to be related to the apartment fire, according to police.

As the apartment fire was being extinguished, sounds of movement came from a rear bedroom. Officers found Moore there and took him into custody.

Eleven residents were forced to leave during the incident, but were allowed back inside after firefighters determined it was safe.

Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to call the Bakersfield Police Department at 327-7111.
