An armed man was shot and killed by Bakersfield police late Sunday after confronting officers investigating a reported incident of domestic violence in southwest Bakersfield.

At about 11:26 p.m., police were dispatched to the 4800 block of Hahn Avenue regarding a domestic violence incident, according to a news release. When officers arrived, they tried contacting people inside an apartment where a witness reported hearing sounds of an assault.

Several minutes later, a man in possession of a firearm confronted the officers, according to the release. During the confrontation, one of the officers fired his duty weapon at the armed suspect, police said.

The man — identified by coroner's officials as 21-year-old Christopher Alexander Okamoto — was struck and died from his injuries at the scene, police said.

A woman and an infant left the apartment, and a firearm was recovered at the scene.

No officers were injured during this incident.

The officer who fired his weapon will be placed on routine administrative leave pending review, the release said.

Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to the Bakersfield Police Department at 327-7111.
