Not guilty pleas were entered on behalf of a man who authorities say kidnapped and sexually assaulted a minor over the weekend.
Superior Court Judge Colette M. Humphrey set bail at $1.5 million for Hilario Viruncruz, 31. He's charged with kidnapping to commit rape and lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14 with force.
Sheriff's officials said Viruncruz lured the juvenile into a vehicle Saturday morning in the area of Niles Street and Horace Mann Avenue, drove to a remote location in east Bakersfield and sexually assaulted the boy. The minor managed to escape and ran to a residential area for help.
On Monday, deputies received a call regarding a possible sighting of the suspect vehicle. Deputies dispatched to the area of Cliffwood Way and Derby Drive in northeast Bakersfield found a truck and trailer matching surveillance images of the suspect vehicle.
They detained the truck's owner, Viruncruz. The victim later positively identified him and the vehicle, according to sheriff's officials.
No prior criminal cases are listed against Viruncruz in Kern County. He has retained Woodland Hills-based attorney Oscar R. Swinton.
Viruncruz is next due in court Sept. 14.
