Nearly a dozen years after her son Erik was killed in a botched carjacking, Julie Sandoval is still grieving. But on Wednesday, the 59-year-old celebrated Erik’s life and the life he made possible for a stranger who received his heart in a transplant. Sandoval traveled from Northern California to Shafter to meet Romiro Cruz, and for the first time in 11 ½ years, she heard the sound of her son’s beating heart.
