In good news for local business, La Costa Mariscos announced it will open a second location at Old River Road and Stockdale Highway in 2018.
The site, part of the Shops at River Walk, was last home to Elephant Bar, which closed in August 2016.
Taking over an existing restaurant space is nothing new for the longtime local Mexican restaurant. Its current location at the Ice House off Chester Avenue was once home to a Sizzler among many other restaurants, including Patrick's, Bootlegger Brewing Company (not to be confused with Bootleggers Craft Pub and Eatery on Oak Street), Bella Italia, McGee's Steakhouse and Shagnasty's Food and Spirits).
Maria Coward and her family opened La Costa in the early 1990s at its original location at 716 21st St. The Mexican restaurant moved to the Ice House in summer 2014, and its former small restaurant space is now home to Nuestro Mexico Restaurant.
Years ago, La Costa operated a second location on Oak Street that has since closed (now home to Agave Grill and Cantina).
On Facebook Friday, the restaurant staff shared the good news, acknowledging the support of local customers as well as matriarch Coward, "the lady who keeps us sane and drives us crazy in the same breath, our mama."
"Your hard work, long days and nights, heart for people and your employees have made this possible. You came to this country with nothing and look where you are. We love you and are excited for our next adventure!"
