All kinds of used books -- from romances to mysteries to works on California history -- will be for sale this weekend at Beale Memorial Library in Bakersfield.

The Friends of the Kern County Library Used Book Sale begins today with a pre-sale for members of Friends of the Kern County Library only. Memberships will be sold at the door.

The remainder of the sale -- Friday, Saturday and Monday -- is open to the general public. Everything is half price on Monday.

Shoppers will find dirt-cheap prices on the thousands of titles available. Paperbacks start at 50 cents. Hard-cover books are a mere dollar.

For $10, "you can get a bag of books," said Rosemary Pacini, Friends of the Kern County Library treasurer.

"You can really stock up," she added.

Friends of the Kern County Library regularly holds used book sales.

"We have a lot of special books this time," Pacini said.

Shoppers will find books on local and California history, rare books and books signed by the authors. There will also be books that have made it onto best-seller lists and books about needlepoint design.

The fiction section will include mysteries, westerns, science fiction and novels. Organizers have added to the romance selection.

Also on sale are books written in foreign languages, such as German, Spanish and Korean; books on crafts, business and finance; text books and research materials, such as dictionaries and atlases.

"We have many books that are almost brand new," Pacini said. "We also have books that are difficult to find."

Many books will be priced in the $2 to $3 range.

Records will go for 50 cents, videotapes a buck.

"They have a selection of Russian music this year," said Nila Stearns, head librarian at Beale.

Proceeds will benefit Friends of the Kern County Library, which in turn gives money to the library to support various projects. For example, the group supports summer reading programs and pays for magazine subscriptions.

So when people make purchases at the used book sales, they're helping the library "have better services and better programming," Stearns said.
