Step back into the ‘50s with East Bakersfield High School’s rendition of "Grease," which opens this weekend.

The musical, written by Warren Casey and Jim Jacobs, was co-directed by me and drama teacher Jenna Odlin. Capturing the young love and friendship in the 1950s, the story follows Danny (East senior Terrance DeLouth), Sandy (sophomore Jenny Rejon) and their friends during their adventures at Rydell High.

The cast is extremely talented and I cannot wait for Bakersfield to see how this show has come together!

Being a student director, while new and challenging, has become a beautiful and exciting experience for me. I have had to learn how to separate friendships from directing and how to gain respect and trust from peers without jeopardizing the connection I have with them outside of the show.

After working onstage with Mrs. Odlin for four years, working alongside her has been a very educational journey. She brings a fresh and new perspective to every scene and provides an extensive amount of passion and intelligence. It has been a tremendous honor and pleasure to work with my teacher for my last show at East.

Performances are Friday and Saturday and March 9 and 10 at 7 p.m. in the East Bakersfield High School Auditorium, 2200 Quincy St. All tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door or in the EBHS Finance Office.

Lauren Ogilvie is a senior at East High.
