Leave the Cinco de Mayo celebrations to others and enjoy an evening of opera at Cal State Bakersfield.
CSUB students and additional performers will present "An Evening of Opera Scenes," featuring excerpts from opera and musical theater with costumes and full staging.
"Roger Upton is our costume designer, and scenic designer Chris Eicher created splendid screen graphics to change places," music director Soo-Yeon Park wrote in an email. "I hope the audience has a good moment in our performance, finding joy in the 'Ordinary Days' like having an 'ice-cream' on a hot summer day as in 'Street Scene.'"
Under the stage direction of Mandy Rees and Peggy Sears, the cast will perform excerpts from Mozart's "Idomeneo," about events in Crete during the Trojan War; Adam Gwon's "Ordinary Days," centered on everyday life in New York; Verdi's tragedy "La Traviata"; and Kurt Weil's "Street Scene," about the romances and squabble of families in Manhattan's east side, including the "Ice-Cream Sextet."
Performers include Haley Smith and Kylee Marchant in "Idomeneo"; Christina Parnell, Josh Forquera and Abigail Harris in "La Traviata"; Natalie Rogge and Michael Ellsworth in "Ordinary Days"; and Smith, Marchant, Forquera, Rogge and Ellsworth along with Eleazar Abdulla and Ken Burdick in "Street Scene."
The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Dore Theatre on campus, 9001 Stockdale Highway.
Admission is $12, $7 for students and seniors (60 and older) and free for CSUB students with ID. Visit csub.edu/music for tickets.
