Merle Haggard at the Opry

Bakersfield's Merle Haggard performs in October 2015 at the Grand Ole Opry. Haggard sang "I Think I Will Just Stay Here and Drink."

Still battling double pneumonia, Merle Haggard has canceled his April concert dates, according to a release issued by his spokeswoman.

“I want to thank my fans for their prayers and well wishes,” the singer said in the statement. “I hope to be back on the road in May, but I’m taking it one day at a time.”

Haggard first reported his battle with pneumonia in December and has been in and out of the hospital since. He canceled a number of tour dates earlier this year but managed to play a few shows with the help of friends Toby Keith and Kris Kristofferson.

The news release did not say whether Haggard is currently in the hospital or where he is recuperating. The country music legend, who will turn 79 April 6, underwent surgery for lung cancer in 2008.

Haggard had been scheduled to perform this month with fellow legend Willie Nelson in Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. His next scheduled tour date is in Arkansas with country star Marty Stuart.
