SAN LEANDRO, Calif. (AP) — Police in Northern California have killed a man they thought was pointing a gun at them — which turned out to be made of wood.

The 56-year-old man died at the scene Tuesday.

Police in the San Francisco Bay Area city say they were called to a home and found a man holding a machete.

According to KRON-TV , police say the man wouldn't listen to officers, expressing "intent to harm" them.

Police say the man went to his front porch and at one point stood up suddenly and pointed something the shape and size of a handgun at officers.

A veteran officer fired a single shot that killed him.

Police say the gun-shaped object was made of wood.

The man's name wasn't immediately released.
