The Train Robbers inaugural season in Bakersfield came to an abrupt end Monday with a second straight lopsided loss in the opening round of the Pecos League Pacific Division playoffs.

Bakersfield (36-25), which entered the playoffs as the division’s No. 2 seed, lost to the No. 3-seeded High Desert Yard Birds 14-4 on Sunday at Sam Lynn Ballpark, before falling 10-3 in Adelanto on Monday to be eliminated in the best-of-three series.

Local product Nick Vehlewald, a former Garces and Cal State Bakersfield player, opened the scoring in Monday’s loss with a solo home run in his first at-bat. But High Desert responded with 10 straight runs, highlighted by a 7-run seventh.

The Train Robbers opened their first season in Bakersfield in impressive fashion, winning their first 10 games, and battling for the division title for much of the season before fading in the final month. Bakersfield went 13-13 in July and finished 10 ½ games behind Tucson.
