Wednesday may have started as an average midweek day for three football players at Bakersfield High, but it ended with a lot more excitement.
Justin McGill, a junior, and sophomores Cameron Williams and Isaiah Jernagin were summoned by Isaiah’s dad, Dejon, to meet him.
The four got into Dejon’s car, and he promptly called Nevada defensive backs coach Courtney Viney, who extended a scholarship offer to each of the three players.
The call was a memorable one.
“After school, Isaiah’s dad said he needed to talk to all three of us and he sounded excited,” Williams said. “Then he called (Viney, who) told us to stay out of trouble, keep up our grades — and then offered us.”
Williams said the Nevada coaching staff is recruiting all three as defensive backs, the same position where former BHS great Asauni Rufus has started two seasons for the Wolf Pack.
“To get it all together as brothers, it was a fun experience,” Williams said.
All three were standouts in the BHS secondary as the Drillers won the program’s state-leading 37th Central Section title last fall.
“It’s extremely exciting,” BHS coach Paul Golla said. “That’s why you coach in high school. They all work hard.”
This is the third offer from Williams, the second for Jernagin and McGill’s first. Williams’ first offer came from Arizona during his freshman year.
“We have been working since the season ended,” Williams. “This was a fun experience.”
Foothill senior 195-pound wrestler Adrian Godinez announced via his Twitter account on Wednesday that he committed to Fresno State.
Godinez was a two-time medalist at the CIF State Wrestling Championships and a two-time BVarsity All-Area first-team selection. He finished his senior year with a 34-8 record.
