The Associated Press of Sports Editors on Monday named an article written by Bakersfield Californian sports editor Zach Ewing as the winner of its 2016 Best Game Story award in the under-30,000 circulation division.

The winning story was Ewing’s account of Bakersfield High’s victory over Fresno-Central for the Central Section football championship in December.

The APSE is a national organization that names top 10s in writing categories at its February judging conference and then has judges rank those entries.

The Californian also received top-10 honors in the Sunday Section and Special Section categories; those categories are not ranked 1 through 10. The awards will be presented at the APSE’s summer conference in New Orleans in June.
