The third annual Sporting Clay Shoot at Five Dogs Shooting Range is next weekend and this year includes a scholarship awarded in memory of Steve Merlo.

The scholarship, of an amount to be determined will be awarded to the highest-placing teen at this year's event, which starts at 9 a.m. on April 22 at Five Dogs, 20238 Woody Road.

Merlo was a well-known hunting and fishing enthusiast and The Californian's longtime Outdoors columnist before he died in October. His friends and family have established the scholarship fund in his memory.

Teams and individuals can sign up for the clay shoot at $500 per team or $125 per individual. The price includes lunch and drinks. Deadline to sign up is Monday. There are prizes for top team, male shooter, female shooter and last place.

There are also sponsorships available for the shoot and the scholarship fund.
