Some of the top racers throughout the country are likely to be taking laps around the tenth-mile indoor clay oval on Wednesday night at the Bakersfield Karting Experience.

The lure is the Winter Showdown Kickoff Party, where drivers and pit crew members in town for the fourth annual event Friday and Saturday at Kern County Raceway Park can sign in early and get pit passes, thus avoiding lines on Thursday when the track opens for an optional practice day.

The driver, or pit crew member, who turns in the fastest lap of the night receives $200 in cash. Plus bragging rights.

That payout went to Bakersfield’s Buddy Shepherd last year, who will be back looking to earn a little more extra cash on Wednesday.

One never knows who might take to the track until they do, but last year many of the Showdown competitors, including two-time winner Bubba Pollard, were among those taking laps.

Pre-sign takes place from 6-8 p.m.

BKE is located at 3101 Gilmore Ave.
