Robby Sawyer was a late arrival Saturday night at Bakersfield Speedway but he was in a big hurry at the end of the night.

Sawyer, who started in the fifth row, ran down early leader Roger Holder and took the lead with five laps to go en route to his third IMCA Modified win of the season.

“I just drove it,” Sawyer said of how he caught, and passed, Holder who was a full straight ahead at one point. “We a had a really good car. The track was probably the best track we’ve had all year. You could run wherever you wanted.”

A late caution set up a two-lap dash to the checkered flag which saw Ethan Dotson get by Holder and come up a car length short in his bid to get Sawyer.

“I’d liked to have see it go one more lap,” Dotson said.

Holder finished third, followed by Troy Foulger and Robert Sanders.

Rookie Trevor Baker extended his points lead in the Hobby Stock division as he raced to his second victory.

Baker drove low in turn one to take the lead from Raymond Noland Jr. on lap 15 and led the rest of the way in the 20-lap feature.

“I found something early on the bottom,” said Baker. “No one else was there. Everybody was up high so I figured I might as well try it and it worked.”

Noland, who took the lead on the first lap, finished second with Marcus Wankum third and Chris Settlemire fourth.

In Mini Stock action, Loni Spiller took the lead four laps into the 20-lap race and went on to her fifth win of the season. Points leader Misty Warren was second and Carter Cherry third.
