The Bakersfield College volleyball team will look to keep its winning ways going — only this time in the playoffs, and on its home floor.

The Renegades, seeded No. 6 in the Southern California Regional Championships, open postseason play Tuesday against No. 11 El Camino. The first round match is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Gil Bishop Sports Center.

BC is coming off a share of the Western State Conference South championship, tying Canyons with a 7-1 league record. The Renegades hold a 19-5 overall record on the season.

The team has won five straight, including a big Nov. 8 victory at Canyons that essentially solidified their spot atop the conference standings. Head coach Carl Ferreira said hosting a playoff match is also a big accomplishment for his program, considering the Renegades haven’t accomplished that feat since 2012.

“Always a huge plus,” Ferreira said of getting a postseason contest at home. “It’s just a tribute to your body of work throughout the season. And, of course, once that’s done, it really doesn’t matter anymore. We move on to the next task, which is playing a really good opponent.”

El Camino has a similar resume in 2017: a 19-4 overall record, a 7-1 mark in the South Coast Conference South division, and an outright league title.

The two teams played earlier this season — on Sept. 13 at El Camino. The Renegades won that match 3-2 (25-21, 25-27, 17-25, 25-17, 15-13).

They also aren’t strangers in the postseason. The past two years the clubs have faced off in the playoffs, with El Camino winning in the second round two years ago and then in the opening round last year.

“Always at their place, though,” Ferreira pointed out. “Earlier in the year, I thought we had a huge breakthrough win at their place. I kind of scheduled it that way on purpose. I wanted to play them at their place. And now I’m excited we have them here.”
