In the annual unveiling of Cal-Hi Sports state-wide honors for high school football players in California, there was plenty of Kern County representation following the 2017 season.

Taft senior lineman Maino Maino was named to the publication’s small-school offensive second team. Shafter junior quarterback Alex Aguilar, the BVarsity Offensive Player of the Year, was named second team small-school multi-purpose.

Aguilar was also named to Cal-Hi’s third-team all-state for juniors, along with North defensive end James Johnson; Liberty running back/linebacker Sam Stewart, Jr.; Bakersfield Christian wide receiver/ kick returner Alex Wallace; and Tahj Wright, who was a standout wide receiver and defensive back for Bakersfield before transferring to Ridgeview in January.

Two local sophomores were also named to the publication's first-team for their class: Garces kicker Peter Delis and BCHS defensive end Ben Yurosek.

More Cal-Hi honors

Centennial senior guard Justin Greiner was named the publication's NorCal boys basketball player of the week.

Greiner was honored after scoring 37 points in a win over Frontier and 28 in a loss to Liberty.

Greiner is averaging a Kern County-best 25.9 points per game this season, including a season-high 42 against Porterville on Dec. 8.

This is the second consecutive NorCal honor by Cal-Hi for a Bakersfield basketball player. The week prior, East senior guard Maryjane Jones was named girls basketball player of the week.

Island connection

The men’s golf team at the University of Hawaii-Hilo has strong Kern County connections — three of the nine players on the team are Bakersfield natives.

Stockdale graduate Jared Kinoshita has been the team’s top performer, with an average score of 73.14 through five events.

The team’s second best performer is Bakersfield Christian graduate Ryan Roodzant. The junior is averaging a score of 74.07 and had a season-best 6-under-par 66 in the final round of the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate in October.

The third is Warren Miller, the 2016 BVarsity All-Area Golfer of the Year during his senior year at Liberty.

Miller transferred to Hawaii-Hilo after Cal State Bakersfield discontinued its men’s golf program last season. He will begin competing this weekend with Kinoshita and Roodzant in the Amer Ari Intercollegiate Tournament in Hawaii.

Locals starting hot

Ben Hibbert, a sophomore hurdler at Cal State Northridge, recently finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles at the Dr. Martin Luther King Collegiate Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico last week.

Hibbert, a Frontier graduate and two-time Central Section champion in the boys 110-hurdles, ran a time of 8.23 seconds in the finals.

Mississippi State freshman — and Liberty High School graduate — Alicia Viveros finished 15th in the shot put with a throw of 45-0.25 at the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville, Tennessee last Saturday.

Viveros finished fifth at the CIF State Track and Field Championships in the shot put last season during her senior year at Liberty.

Two former local standouts also recently helped the Mount Mercy (Iowa) University women's 3,200-meter relay team to an indoor national A standard time. Garces graduate Kathryn Vander Poel and Stockdale graduate Mady Roth combined for a time of 9:44.76 at the St. Ambrose Invitational on Jan. 27 in Davenport, Iowa.
