It was a busy first weekend of high school winter sports for programs all around Kern County, setting up another big week coming up with the Lloyd Williams/ Kern Schools Shootout in boys basketball at North starting Wednesday.

Let’s take a look back at what you might have missed.

• While Bakersfield High took home gold at the Rumble of the Rig at BHS, Frontier took second overall at the Newbury Park Invitational with 242 team points, behind Clovis High which won the title with 274.

Cole Reyes (120 pounds) and Trent Tracey (195) both won individual titles for the Titans while Garrett Fletcher (132), Ryan Morphis (145) and Max Aguirre (160) earned silver medals.

Other top seven placers for Frontier were: Josh Acala (3rd, 106), Noah Ozuna (3rd, 113), Jose Landin (3rd, 126), Christian Landin (3rd, 152), Andrew Carter (5th, 170), Jack Pafford, (7th, 182), Matt Hernandez (7th, 220) and Grant Bryant (3rd, 285).

• At Golden Valley on Saturday, the Bulldogs came away with four individual champions during the Queen of the Valley girls wrestling tournament.

Aliana Lefotu (131), Assata Lewis (160), Monica Chavez, (170) and Avea Lefotu (189) all won titles for Golden Valley.

Other local champions were Ridgeview’s Genesis Quirarte (101), Ariana Juarez (106) and Kendra Juarez (111) of Foothill, Alyssa Valdivia (116) from Frontier, North’s Elisabeth Vasquez (150) and East’s Cynthia Pelayo at 137, the 2016-17 BVarsity Girls Wrestler of the Year who placed sixth at the CIF State Girls Wrestling Championships in February.

• McFarland boys and Liberty girls soccer teams won team titles at the Liberty Tournament over the weekend. The Cougars defeated Arvin in penalty kicks for the boys title while the Patriots beat Highland 3-0 on the girls side.

• South High boys soccer team won the Premier Division title at the Harold S. Young Soccer Tournament at Buchanan High in Clovis on Saturday. South plays at Ridgeview on Wednesday in a big non-league match. South won three consecutive section titles from 2014-16 and are now in D-I and Ridgeview, a semifinals in D-III last season, is now in D-II.

• Independence won the Hwy 58 boys basketball tournament title at Mira Monte on Saturday. Lance Henderson and Elijah Carter named first-team all tournament and Josh Codaman was named defensive MVP for the Falcons.

• In a rematch of the Central Section Division II girls basketball championships in March, Bakersfield beat Independence 45-36 at the Redwood Tournament in Visalia on Saturday. Taylor Caldwell led BHS with 29 points, 14 rebounds, eight assists and six steals in the victory against the Falcons, who won the D-II title over BHS.

Kahlaijah Dean led Independence with 16 points. Independence played without four players on Saturday because of SAT testing and BHS did not play in the title game because of the einter formal dance on campus.

Caldwell is averaging 17.3 points, 9.8 rebounds, 7.3 assists and 7.0 steals per game for the 4-0 Drillers.

Here’s what’s coming up

• East High will host the Coyote Classic for boys and girls wrestling on Friday and Saturday.

• Clois Jones, the 2016-17 BVarsity Girls Soccer Player of the Year, leads Frontier with three goals for the Titans (3-1-1) heading into a big week. Frontier will play at Clovis West on Tuesday before playing in the Madera Showcase over the weekend.

•Finally, the Lloyd Williams/ KSFCU Shootout boys basketball tournament begins on Wednesday at North. With the new gym on campus, all games will be played on campus at either the new or old gym.

Here is a list of first round games played on Wednesday, beginning at 3:30 p.m.

The finals are set for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
