The official opening of North High’s new gymnasium will take place Monday in a girls/boys basketball doubleheader against Centennial.

The girls game will tip off at 6 p.m. while the boys contest is scheduled to get underway at 7:30.

Between the two games there will be a ceremony celebrating the grand opening, as well as a ribbon cutting commemorating the event.

Two weeks ago, at a press conference unveiling the new facility, principal Mark Balch said North is hopeful for a strong turnout in the two-thousand seat gymnasium.

“This grand opening is going to be an exciting thing, and we’re really looking for community involvement,” Balch said.

“Two thousand people is a lot to come to a high school basketball game. We’re playing Centennial High School, we hope to win that game, and we’re really looking forward to filling this gym.”

Balch said the project took just under two years to complete and cost about $12 million.

Lloyd Williams court is named in honor of the former coach, athletic director and assistant principal at North.

“We’re just fortunate to have this wonderful facility, to share with not only our students and the community here, but the rest of Bakersfield and all the other schools that will be competing and playing here, in our tournaments, against us, and against other teams,” said North athletic director Brian Huens. “It’s very exciting for us.”
