Chris Dalton (13), Michael Nick (77), Paul Ebersbacher (02) and Roger Holder (24) are nose to tail in a Super Stock race earlier this year at Kern County Raceway. Holder is the points leader heading Saturday night's race at the track.

The last opportunity to see pavement racing at Kern County Raceway Park before a five-week summer break is this Saturday night.

Late Models and Super Stocks will be in action on the half-mile; Mini Stocks, Legends and the 911 Series take to the quarter-mile; and the Golden Empire Supermoto riders will negotiate numerous areas of the track as they twist, turn and jump their way on a circuitous course.

“We’re going to take that last weekend in July, the first three or four weeks in August and let everybody get ready for back-to-school and finish up with their vacations and spend some time with the family,” said Steve Hughes of KCRP. “It also gives the racers a break to make sure they can do the needed maintenance on their race cars and be ready for that final season push.”

The pavement track gets back into action Aug. 26.

This week, Late Model drivers will compete in twin features and the question is, Can anyone beat Trevor Huddleston? He has won all but two of the features and leads Brandon Weaver by 14 points for the season.

Buddy Shepherd, who won every race last year en route to the title, won both twin features this year in his only appearance at the track. He has since sold the car to David Haagsma, who placed fourth in each of the twin races on July 8.

Roger Holder leads the Super Stock points race, Louis Tyrrell has won every Legends race thus far and Damien Leininger has the Mini Stock points lead.

Racing starts at 7.

Late Models at Speedway

The fastest stock cars on dirt — Late Models — will be part of a busy Saturday night of racing at Bakersfield Speedway, with a total of six divisions in action.

Also competing will be Hobby Stocks, Hard Tops, NMRA Three-Quarter Midgets, Mini Dwarfs and the So Cal Enduro cars.

Cody Laney and Steve Drake have each won a Late Model race this year, and the two put on quite the show, running side-by-side for nearly the final half of the last race June 3 with Drake getting that win.

Trevor Baker raced to victory in the last Hobby Stock race and widened his points lead to 30 over Chris Settlemire. Settlemire and Baker, a rookie, each have two wins. Eight different drivers have won features this year.

Racing starts at 7.

Famoso dark until Aug 5

Auto Club Famoso Raceway be dark the next couple of weekends before the Red List Series on Aug. 5.

The track held a Street Tuners event Saturday with almost 200 participants taking advantage of the opportunity to run down the strip from 8 p.m. until 2 a.m. Another Street Tuners event, geared toward DMV-legal cars and bikes, will be held Aug. 19.

Shepherd gets first Tour win

Bakersfield’s Buddy Shepherd raced to his first Spears Southwest Tour victory Saturday in the 51 Fifty Energy Drink 125 at Madera Speedway.

Shepherd, the 2015 Late Model champ at the track, made the winning move on lap 70 when he dove below a lapped car entering turn four with leader Carlos Viera on the outside. Shepherd exited the turn with the lead, moved back up to the preferred high groove and led the rest of the way on the third-mile oval.

Shepherd, who has struggled to find speed in the family-owned car, was driving a car owned by Bakersfield’s Nick Sivesind.

Former series champ Craig Raudman was second and Eric Schmidt third.

Derek Thorn of Bakersfield set fast time in qualifying, led early and was running on lap 90 when a cut tire sent him into the wall, ending his race.

Shepherd is the fourth winner in as many races this year. Bobby Hodges, Blaine Rocha and Thorn also have wins.
