Stockdale sophomore Brandon Park is the highest-seeded local singles player at the Central Section boys tennis individual championships today and Saturday at Tulare-Mission Oak.

Park, undefeated at 17-0, is the No. 2 seed, behind Clovis North senior Daly Meinert, the 2015 section champion.

Bakersfield Christian freshman Nathan Kwon is the No. 3 seed, along with teammate Erik Buetow at No. 5, East senior Kaleb Johnson (7th seed), Bakersfield sophomore Jack Zander (11) and Arvin’s Manrico Cabaloza (16).

Liberty brothers Nolan and Phillip Shafik are the top local doubles team in the section tournament at No. 4, followed by Raguvir Kunani and Andrew Huang of Stockdale at No. 5.

The first round for singles begins today at 9 a.m. and the doubles competition begins at 11 a.m. with the quarterfinals at 1 p.m. for singles and 3 p.m. for the doubles.

The finals are slated for noon on Saturday.

Four locals at swimming state meet

Led by Liberty senior Julio Alcantar, the Central Section Division I champion in the boys 100-yard backstroke, there are four locals competing this weekend at the CIF State Swimming and Diving Championships at Clovis West High School.

Alcantar is the 37th seed in the 100 back with preliminary heats beginning at 2:30 p.m. today.

Frontier junior Ariane Skeggs advanced to state in two events, the girls 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle.

Skeggs will compete with teammate Kassidy Lemminn in the 200 free.

Frontier junior Colin Rabanal will compete in the boys 100 free.

The top 16 times in each event advance to the A or B finals, which start at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

College signing

Highland senior Mariah Rex will sign to play women’s soccer at Metropolitan (Colo.) State University at 3:20 p.m. today at Highland.
