After 10 years as head football coach at Golden Valley, Erich Smith has resigned.
The Bulldogs went 51-68 during Smith's tenure as head coach. He took over the program in 2007.
In 2015, Golden Valley reached the Central Section Division III semifinals but went 3-7 the last two seasons while not reaching the playoffs.
"We are grateful for the 14 years that Erich Smith has spent coaching the student athletes at Golden Valley High School, with the last 10 as head coach," athletic director Robert Haskell wrote in an email. "Over these years, Erich has shown a relentless commitment working with hundreds of young men, both on and off the field. He will be missed on the sidelines of Bulldog Stadium. Erich will continue in his position as a social studies teacher."
Golden Valley will begin its search for a new head coach immediately. Applicants can contact Haskell at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Smith is the fourth head coach from the east side of Bakersfield to vacate his position in the last two months.
East let go of David Fanucchi in November before the Blades' playoff game against North.
Dave Thorp was hired as interim head coach for the team's playoff loss, and was named permanent head coach last month, according to athletic director Ken Chapman.
From 2010-12, Thorp held a 10-20 record as head coach of the Blades.
Mira Monte and Foothill are also seeking new head football coaches.
